We at Boys and Girls High School hosted a Career and Technical Education Town Hall to share and inform about the many benefits and opportunities of our C.T.E. programs.

good afternoon it is indeed a pleasure to welcome first CTE town hall meeting technical aphids an employee ability scales at boys and girls high school you have been fortunate to take classes that provide you with specialized training in architectural drafting computer programming and electrical engineering I have to give a special thanks 83 Rodgers thank you for helping our young people learn more about the multiple opportunities that awaits them in the trade area I would also like to thank our guidance counselor misses him and has in the slowest for ensuring that our students are knowledgeable about these old timers Waze has a plan for post-secondary Opportunity Partners Mr Portola from software engineer at eBay Mindy architect Acme Lewis Lewis electrical Corp Susan write thank you for helping our students learn how to conduct themselves in the business world and make valuable connections that may lead to Future in this collaboration with our school Community has led to the state certification of our electrical and computer technology program over the last year graduate with ncte endorsed diploma in their trade area congratulations to our amazing C-TEC on a job well done hi everybody this is Miss World. information technology to hear a voice girls high school I am passionate about teaching computer science to our students have a unique way of War and understand the information technology to prepare young people with the skills necessary to be a critical thinker you will learn how to program the computer to do what you wanted to do in a new our second year students are able to take a college-level course in advanced placement computer science gaming and web design course and ever able to learn how to program drones that's right on man aircraft I'm going to end up with the saying from Steve Jobs the creator of Apple of course he says everybody how to program a computer because it teaches you how to unicorn in the classroom I'd like to introduce ITT Student Alex Paris Watson hello everyone my name is Alexander Perez and I am a junior and I'm a third-year student of the information and Technology Program Boys & Girls High School now I have one quick question to ask could you give up your phone laptop tablet video games for just 3 days none of that no phone laptop 3 days I think I know your answer and take on the wall as well because technology is such a key part of our everyday life we have online classes right now perfectly demonstrated he have virtual learning right now imagine doing virtual learning without any of the signal to think about that for a second I don't think it be possible imma be honest I do not think it would be you would be struggling like imagine how to do your virtual in the entire on your phone by itself there so many limits to your phone and then do it on a laptop when do everything you could type you work turn it any easier navigate to it easier everything is just smoother so I feel like being in the program in class is a very key part 2 being able to get a job future cuz everything is being automated nowadays so you want to learn how to be part of that Innovation and I was part of the AP Computer Science class last year and I ain't easy class I feel like any of you as long as you work hard and pushed through you can get through it and the class gets one I promise you a real world scenario and using technology next up we will hear from our architecture teacher Miss Beckford the architect program introduces students to important architectural Concepts and skills through the required coursework and internships while providing them with the necessary tools to be college and career-ready Architecture Lab is equipped hybrid Drafting and computer workstation and has all the tools that students need to learn how to draw with a t Square as well as with computer software such as order cat our students have the opportunity to build their portfolio I've gained Real World experience to Industry Partnerships an internship such as a discover architecture career exploration program the ace Mentor program of Greater New York the most recently Pratt Institute School of Architecture looking to the Future students who successfully complete the course sequence in architectural design and drafting who graduate with a professional certification in Autodesk AutoCAD and earn a CTE endorsement on high school diploma so if you are creative enjoy Hands-On work or have an interest in architecture or a related field the let your guidance counselor know that you would like to be a part of architecture program in the city departments we look forward to having you to miss breckford for sharing all those wonderful pictures of your students working in your architecture class today we will hear from National architect miss me Bingo and Miss Susan Wright hi. Good afternoon I'm excited to be here with you guys and unfortunately we can't be here together but hopefully we'll be able to share our experiences shortly but I have a brief presentation on going to share with you so I've been in the field for over 25 years and had some exciting experiences that I want to share so you list as you can see this is a Time Square Pavilion here some of you may be asking what is architecture architecture I believe it is a combination of Art and Science that involves the 3/8 in both and overall look of the structure as well as the how the building looks but also developing plans and details to God the construction team to  you want the building to look so beyond you know who does architecture and what do Architects do Architects plan and design exterior and interior buildings but also in kinds of ways from school to offices to housing hotels hospitals anything that you can occupy as well as you know even the airport since and and Master Plan city so we also create large master plan that are very large scale for community service as well as cities and usually were involved in every phase of the building or a project from concept to completion so it's a long process but you know when we're looking at designing a building or looking at the function the safety the needs of the people that's using the building and also considering the client's needs as budget limitations as everything cost money so when we're also look get interior spaces and layouts and finishes Architects really are looking at the creativity and artistic ability and the visual you don't worry and Tatian so it's it's to be able to conceptualize and to understand spatial relationships so we so I have to have some written oral communication skills but also it's it's a combination of what I call Art and Science so why do buildings still look the way they do LOL it's through the development of the architectural Vision in the architect's Vision shrew characters of the exterior materials as well as interior materials but also programming in use and it involves Technology and Engineering and the design is basis so the vision comes from the character of how the architect fees to space from space is like classrooms for lecture to spaces that support technology that puts the human connection from Center no spaces to living studying work in collaboration so any place that you occupy as well as even spaces where we can be able to bring her ideas forward and open to environments rather than just in clothes. play some so it even goes to spaces for play and then it's a larger play then you know looking at places for us to connect and recharge our minds in North Shore sold so you know you may not consider the spaces that you're currently in is designed by an architect with someone designs that space and we have to look beyond that you know the complete ecosystem and looking at Architects consider the climate impact cuz building does having pack but we also look at the siding the solar the ventilation and there's a way to orient buildings in a way that impacts our climate so we need to comply with energy code compliance as well as a Building Code Compliance but the you may ask do you know who does architecture and you can be an architect there many Pathways and some of it may not be as traditional as others but if you're considering a career in architecture please make sure that you're high curriculum includes math science and art and even carrying a Sketchbook that use it in recording your notes or your surroundings is really a very helpful tool as a given event family patient is an opportunity to observe your environment so you know how do you become an architect is involved education experience and an examination and you know college education is required for therapeutic repast depending on how you develop your higher education secondary education degree and then you know what you can find out more about connecting with your mentors at the DLC CTE program as well as there's other in mentoring programs in mentioned before as well as additional resources that you should really and I'll be able to share these resources in these links available after the presentation so hopefully you find a passion in what you do as well as how you move forward and how you occupy space because design it everyone's the designer that biscuit architecture surpassed there are certain kinds of architecture going to speak to you and other kinds then that aren't that much of Interest and you know learn that early on so just try to figure out what kind of buildings do I want to do what kind of the country do I want to live you know in a am I or am I more interested in homes or private space is so there's so many different aspects to how to be an architect send a message to feed into your past she did you know that I just mentioned about the educational requirements I'm definitely architecture is your path be sure you get into a program that is going to be recognized on many people go into programs that are not certified and have to jump to another program and lose time instead so is this is your path get on it and you know make sure that you're that you're in the right professional program stitch people if you have questions about it you know this Johnson asked me to talk my backgrounds in starting my own firm I've been working for over 30 years I worked for almost all of the time for other firms for August other Architects for firms that had you know 4280 employees or a couple of a partner level never made the leap to start my own firm until I was 50 something that's older than any way I should have done it earlier 57 I worked with a coach and I really talked I talked with her about what is it about architecture that I'm passionate about what is it that that I think I have to to offer and I should always done fordable housing work at it always been you how's the work that I did and I found it on the idea that if I was going to have my own firm that I wanted to have all my time focused on the thing I was passionate about affordable housing and the kids back to that word you know the thing that you want to live eat and breathe and have that be the focus because once you've got a mission statement and he's got to focus on the stuff falls into place and as I said I would have done it earlier people ask me my whole life when you going to start your own firm because I'm single I was always worried about the finances of if I was had my own firm so we never did it and I wish I'd gotten over that fear earlier encourage you to think think I'm on that if there's something that you feel very strongly about follow it and I think that's all stay right now well thank you so much I appreciate and design program she doing and I'm a sophmore that was a good high school as a freshman the school Advanced to take me to CTE courses because it was a new opportunity to learn something I really want you to access your class because I have prior knowledge on account of my sister who studied architecture College I enjoyed our take the class A lot I got the opportunity to explore different types of structures from all around the world I saw what it takes to come up with designs and have them built remind about other professor in the article field other than our side. There's a whole team of people involved in putting a building out whatever you like about the class was being able to practice my free hand drawing and make math models of buildings the class has made me think and solve problems I like the fact that his Beckford was there for support while responsible for my own work I would highly recommend this class to anyone thank you rush sharing that personal connection that you have to the architecture field now let's take a look at all the electrical program starting off with Mr Hudson being the electrical teacher my name is Stephen Hudson technology steam program has eight schools that they partner with girls high school is one of that we are very fortunate to be one of those partner schools let's hear from the steam program hello welcome to the Brooklyn steam center located at building 77 301 on the Brooklyn Navy Yard this presentation offers a brief view into the Career and Technical education programs offered at scheme before we describe the programs we wanted to make sure that we're clear on the universal scholar . so you will have regardless of pathway the two year Journey you will have at the Brooklyn steam center is designed to immerse you in our 11th and 12th grade years by inserting you into a robust industry environment preparing you to special rise and thrive in your selected pathway during your time as seen you will actively acquire Technical and professional skills to industry-relevant project synthesize multiple skills and tools into capstone's and Joker Network through exposure to Industry professionals and workplaces in action apply new skills to internships and work experiences in their field and reflect on professional growth I'm entering an ongoing check-ins all of which occurred in the specialization of one of five pathways the pathways chosen is based on your personal preference that you rank your options are computer science and information technology construction technology culinary arts and Hospitality management design and engineering and filming media in computer science Information Technology Scholars will cover the roles of telecommunication installer Computer Systems Support agent administrator security analyst data scientist an application developer Scholars can earn credentials and all of these areas from vendors like Microsoft and CompTIA in construction technology scholar engage in learning of Occupational Safety carpentry masonry electrical installation plumbing and solar installation which is coupled with a project management component Scholars can earn certifications such as the ocean 30 solar 1 certification as well as nicer assessments in culinary arts Scholars will step into the kitchen with the knowledge of food safety and sanitation under their belt while preparing delicious cultural aware dishes for Savory and sweet taste Scholars can earn in New York City food handler's license on the ServSafe food handler certification in design and Engineering Scholars will utilize a system thinking mindset to problems through creative lens which will result in the development of digital designs that will eventually be fabricated using hand tools or 3D printers Scholars can earn a certification for SolidWorks in film and media Scholars who conceptualized design write and produce different types of media while using me audio and video editing skills and post-production to make stunning narratives Scholars can earn industry credentials in Adobe Premiere as well as avid O'Toole's for additional information or earn earned ACC indoor region for growing Prudential the CCC program to buy the great adjectives Buddhist monks have access to support from supporting companies and mentors college and the MPC. of Manhattan Community College what is an articulation agreement laws that's an agreement between boys and girls high school and these two colleges that will allow you to earn to get credit for the work that you've done at BMCC because you taking class at boys and girls high school you'll have the opportunity to also earn credit at BMCC for computer programming and Pima college for electrical insulation how do you apply to a CTE program for the Boys & Girls High School program in the 9th and 10th grade you complete a quest a quest 4 minutes free if you're not on this end of town hall today
