Dear Brooklyn North High Schools Family,

It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as your new Interim Acting Superintendent of Brooklyn North High Schools. My commitment to this amazing district began when I migrated from Jamaica, WI with my family at 8 years old. I attended schools in Brooklyn North and when I graduated college, I began my teaching career in a Brooklyn North High School. Over the next 27 years, I served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of continuous improvement, and Deputy Superintendent of Brooklyn North High Schools. Each step has prepared me to lead with both head and heart to build on the momentum of progress, innovation, and equity for our extraordinary students, families, and communities.

My leadership is shaped by research in pursuit of my Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership. I examined the benefits of creating psychologically safe school environments for immigrant students in New York City Public Schools. This work, rooted in my own lived experience, continues to fuel my unwavering belief that every child deserves to feel seen, safe, and supported as they unlock their full potential.

For the 2025–2026 school year, I look forward to advancing our shared goals in amplifying student voice, strengthening partnerships with parents and communities, and expanding college and career pathways so that every student has a strong plan toward economic security. Together, we will deepen culturally responsive instruction, strengthen literacy and math outcomes through targeted interventions and professional development, and widen business partnerships that give students real-world learning opportunities.

Aligned with the Chancellor’s Priorities, I remain committed to ensuring that all students read well, thrive physically and emotionally, graduate college- and career-ready, and that every school responds with excellence to the families and communities it serves.

I am deeply proud to be both a product of the New York City Public Schools and a parent of New York City Public School graduates. My lifelong commitment is to uplift students, families, educators, and school leaders across our district.

Please join me in congratulating Superintendent Janice Ross on her retirement. We celebrate her 32 years of steadfast commitment to students, staff, and families grounded in the pedagogy of critical love.

Brooklyn North High Schools Family, I look forward to building a strong, collaborative partnership with you as we continue the work of uplifting every school and unlocking the brilliance within every student.

With gratitude and excitement,

Rushell White
