NYC DOE, NEW YORK YANKEES, AND STONEWALL INN ANNOUNCE FOURTH ANNUAL YANKEES-STONEWALL SCHOLARSHIP

NEW YORK – New York City Schools Chancellor David C. Banks, New York Yankees, and Stonewall Inn are proud to announce that applications are open for the 2022 Yankees-Stonewall Scholarship. Now in its fourth year, these $10,000 college scholarships celebrate the achievements of New York City public school graduating seniors who have demonstrated strong academic achievement and impactful support of the LGBTQ community. All New York City public school seniors are eligible to apply HEREApplications will close on April 24th. There will be a group of finalists selected first, and then and one student from each borough will be selected from those finalists.

The Department of Education remains committed to providing LGBTQ students with ongoing resources, support, activities, and events. GSA clubs continue to thrive, teachers are attending training workshops related to supporting LGBTQ students, and youth facing organizations continue to find innovative ways to interact with and bring together youth during this pandemic.

The Yankees-Stonewall Scholars initiative was created in September 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising and celebrate the achievements of New York City public school students. The New York City Department of Education, in partnership with the Yankees and Stonewall Inn, will review all applications and select the five recipients to be announced in Spring 2022.

Scholarship Eligibility Criteria:

  • A current Senior in high school
  • Intending on attending a two-year or four-year college.
  • A member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ+) community or someone who has contributed significantly to the LGBTQ+ community.
  • At least a 2.5 GPA

 

In addition to meeting the eligibility criteria, applicants must obtain and upload a letter of recommendation from a teacher at their school and respond to both writing prompts on the application.
