EMERGING LEADERS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE

The EMERGING LEADERS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE is seeking young men of color to participate in the Institute. We have extended our deadline to February 5th.

EMERGING LEADERS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE

 

Beginning in Spring 2021, The Office of Equity and Access (OEA) will begin the Emerging Leaders for Social Justice Institute program. The institute will combine experiential and project-based learning to Empower, Engage, Educate, and Elevate students to address social justice and activism in their schools, community, and world. It will focus on academic excellence, team building activities, community and civic engagement, academic instruction, leadership development, community service, peer support, and cultural enrichment. Students will engage in large and small group activities, interact with role models and motivational speakers, discuss current issues affecting diverse communities, and practice problem solving using team approaches, ethics, and decision making while exploring the power of risk taking, communication, and facilitation. 

 

VISION: Guide students in becoming effective social change agents through self-transformation, leadership development, and community building by the honoring, affirming, and uplifting of their identity, culture, and historical heritage.    

 

MISSION: Provide historically underserved student populations attending New York City Public High Schools enrolled in grades 10-12 access to district-based social justice youth development programming designed to develop their self, social, and global awareness with special consideration to leadership development, post-secondary readiness, identity development, mental health and wellness, and civic engagement in racial & social justice issue.

 

PROGRAM BENEFITS:

   Students will   

  •  be eligible to earn 1 elective credit   
  • receive free resources to support their learning
  • have opportunities to lead local and national forums and town hall meetings   
  • the opportunity to apply for a paid internship in the second year of the program 
  • exposed to male mentorship allies
  • have the opportunity to serve as an ambassador the Emerging Leaders for Social Justice Institute, Office of Equity and Access, and NYC Department of Education professionally and with prestige.  

 

ELIGIBILITY:

o    NYC Public High School Student 

o    Enrolled in Grade 10

o    Interest, passion or potential to be involved in social/justice issues
